Histories of School-Based Policing: Comparative and International Perspectives

Fellow: Derron O. Wallace

Subjects: Sociology/ African diaspora studies/ education studies/ history

This project provides an alternative analysis to the history of policing in British and American public schools. Histories of policing in schools are often limited to specific national contexts, with little or no attention to their global and transnational architecture. Pushing beyond the limits of current scholarship, this project explores the formation and function of policing in and around schools as a state practice and policy mandate, drawing on global cities such as London and New York City as key cases. Critically, the project will also trace the work of the British and American empires in the development of street and school-based policing in Anglophone Africa and the Caribbean. As part of this project, student researchers will collect and analyze archival materials; conduct literature reviews; liaise with international historians and sociologists of education; and more. Student researchers will benefit from participating in this project by strengthening their data analysis skills and enhancing their competitiveness for study and work in policy analysis.
